Separate an inflation target from a rate decision
A document can define the MPC’s job without announcing what the MPC has decided at a meeting.
Published . Original source: 28 October MPC remit letter, published . The 28 October date is an archive slot; this article was not published that day.
Make a two-column note
In the 28 October remit, put “2% annual CPI inflation, symmetric target” under framework. Leave the latest rate decision column for a separately dated MPC statement and minutes. Do not copy the framework into the decision column.
Read the tolerance language carefully
The letter discusses explanatory letters if inflation is more than one percentage point away from target. It says that threshold triggers accountability, not a target range or automatic rate change.
Use the method elsewhere
When a policy headline appears, record document type, issuer, publication date, and whether it is a proposal, remit, speech, forecast, or decision. That stops an ordinary framework update from becoming a false market signal.
Check the original document
