Use scenarios without assigning invented probabilities

Show possible outcomes while preserving uncertainty.

Source foundation

Risk tolerance and the time available before spending matter when considering investments. Investor.gov: gauge your risk tolerance.

A worked example

A paper model starts at 1,000 units and shows ending values of 600, 1,000, and 1,400 under three assumed changes. Giving each scenario a one-third probability would add a claim unsupported by the exercise. The table can remain useful with probabilities marked unspecified.

Original hypothetical example. Amounts, people, events, and scenarios above are invented for learning; they are not historical observations or forecasts.

What to take from it

Scenario analysis does not require pretending to know likelihoods.

Try it on paper

Add a column describing what each outcome would mean for the fictional plan.

Keep the assumptions beside your answer. Check the result before applying the idea to a different situation.
