Bank consults on tokenised collateral for central clearing

The Bank is seeking views on supervisory expectations for CCPs that want to accept tokenised forms of collateral already eligible under the proposed rulebook.

A consultation, not final permission

The consultation paper says it would clarify how the Bank assesses applications under the existing supervisory process. It does not establish a separate regime or approve every tokenised asset for central clearing. The accompanying 29 October news release says responses are due by 12 February 2027.

The asset and its wrapper both matter

The Bank’s initial view is that the regulatory framework is not a barrier to tokenised forms of eligible collateral. It still expects collateral to be valued, transferred, and realised when needed, including under stress. Tokenisation cannot substitute for liquidity, credit quality, custody, or operational controls.

What this does not establish

The consultation concerns central counterparties and wholesale clearing. It does not say retail investors can post any token as margin, that a tokenised security is automatically eligible, or that the proposed expectations are already final.
