Investing Checklist

Research the ETF before trusting the ticker.

An ETF is a wrapper. The research job is to understand what it owns, what it costs, how it trades, who runs it, and why it belongs in a portfolio.

ETF Checklist

Check structure before story.

Cost

Expense ratio and trading costs.

Fees, spreads, platform charges, currency conversion, and tax drag matter over time.

Liquidity

How easily does it trade?

Volume, spread, market makers, underlying liquidity, and order type matter.

Holdings

What does it actually own?

Holdings, index method, concentration, overlap, rebalancing, and exposure limits.

Issuer

Who operates it?

Issuer reputation, custody, administrator, documents, filings, and risk disclosures.

Portfolio Role

The final question is purpose.

Decision prompt

Before buying any ETF, write one sentence: “This fund belongs in my portfolio because...” If the answer is only hype, price movement, or fear of missing out, the research is incomplete.
