Keep revisions visible in a research log

Preserve what changed between releases.

Source foundation

Seasonal adjustment helps separate recurring seasonal patterns from other price movements. BLS: using seasonally adjusted data.

A worked example

A fictional series initially reports 0.3 and later revises the same observation to 0.2. The research log retains both values, their release dates, and the reason if supplied. Silently replacing the old value makes it harder to understand an earlier interpretation.

Original hypothetical example. Amounts, people, events, and scenarios above are invented for learning; they are not historical observations or forecasts.

What to take from it

A current dataset and an earlier decision record serve different purposes.

Try it on paper

Create columns for first release, revised value, and revision date.

Keep the assumptions beside your answer. Check the result before applying the idea to a different situation.
