Do not compare unlike time windows silently

State which period each number describes.

Source foundation

Seasonal adjustment helps separate recurring seasonal patterns from other price movements. BLS: using seasonally adjusted data.

A worked example

An invented report puts a one-month change beside a twelve-month change and calls the larger number an acceleration. The values describe different windows, so the comparison needs an explanation. A better table uses separate columns and compares like windows across successive observations.

Original hypothetical example. Amounts, people, events, and scenarios above are invented for learning; they are not historical observations or forecasts.

What to take from it

Similar percentage symbols do not make two measurements equivalent.

Try it on paper

Rewrite the table headings to distinguish the reference periods.

Keep the assumptions beside your answer. Check the result before applying the idea to a different situation.
