Keep a household basket distinct from a broad index
Compare spending weights before comparing experiences.
Source foundation
CPI measures changes in consumer prices; it is not an individual household budget. BLS: CPI questions and answers.
A worked example
In an invented two-item budget, food costs rise 10 percent while another category is unchanged. A household spending half its budget on food sees a 5 percent weighted increase in this simplified basket; one spending a fifth sees 2 percent. Real budgets have more items and changing choices.
Original hypothetical example. Amounts, people, events, and scenarios above are invented for learning; they are not historical observations or forecasts.
What to take from it
Different spending weights can produce different personal experiences.
Try it on paper
Repeat the example with food representing 30 percent of spending.
Keep the assumptions beside your answer. Check the result before applying the idea to a different situation.
