Make fee assumptions visible in a projection

Show the calculation without implying a return forecast.

Source foundation

Investment fund fees and expenses reduce investor returns. Investor.gov: fund fees and expenses.

A worked example

In a simplified no-growth illustration, a 1,000-unit starting balance is reduced by 1 percent at each year-end. It becomes 990 after year one and 980.10 after year two. This isolates the arithmetic of a recurring percentage deduction and deliberately excludes returns, deposits, taxes, and other costs.

Original hypothetical example. Amounts, people, events, and scenarios above are invented for learning; they are not historical observations or forecasts.

What to take from it

A model should say what it excludes as plainly as what it calculates.

Try it on paper

Recalculate two years using a hypothetical 0.5 percent deduction.

Keep the assumptions beside your answer. Check the result before applying the idea to a different situation.
