A worked example
Suppose a practice dashboard cannot reach its data provider at 09:00. Its last successful update was 08:45. Displaying zero would confuse absence of data with a measured balance. A better record says unavailable and retains the last observation with its timestamp.
Original hypothetical example. Amounts, people, events, and scenarios above are invented for learning; they are not historical observations or forecasts.
What to take from it
Missing data and a zero value mean different things.
Try it on paper
Design a status message containing the last successful check time.
Keep the assumptions beside your answer. Check the result before applying the idea to a different situation.
